A new initiative aimed at transforming public perception of careers in Britain’s highways sector has been launched by the Highways Sector Council (HSC).
The ‘Ways of Life’ campaign seeks to highlight how roads and transport networks are vital to modern life whilst showcasing diverse career opportunities within the industry.
The campaign features an engaging video narrated by Mr Gee, which explores the numerous ways people interact with highways daily—from bus journeys and commercial deliveries to cycling and walking.
It emphasises how the sector contributes to building a more sustainable society.
Lilian Greenwood, Minister for Future of Roads at the Department for Transport, said: “Our road network is made possible by a talented workforce, who are the foundation for delivering better, safer roads that connect businesses and communities, and grow our economy.
“The future of our roads depends on a new generation to drive this work forward, which is why we have partnered with Highways Sector Council to launch its ‘Ways of Life’ skills campaign.
“We hope this campaign will help bring more brilliant people into the workforce, to continue to deliver our world leading road infrastructure.”
Developed by early and mid-career professionals, the campaign challenges traditional views about working in highways and transport.
Three industry role models share their experiences, including Sharon Changula, Head of Bus Funding at the Department for Transport, Grace Prendergast, a Carbon Analyst from FM Conway, and Shyam Ruparelia, a Senior Civil Engineer Technician at Leicestershire County Council.
The freely available video resource aims to attract and retain talent within the transport and highways industry.
It particularly focuses on how the sector offers opportunities for those interested in contributing to sustainable transport solutions and community connectivity.
The HSC said they encourage organisations and individuals to share the campaign materials widely, hoping to inspire more people to consider a career in this essential sector.
